The Electric Google

Posted by Save The Fucking Planet on Feb 10, 2009 As if Google wasn't already AMAAAAZING. As if they didn't already care about developing sustainable technology. This Googleplex plans to release a new way for people to monitor their home energy usage via the web. It's called the Power Meter.
The idea is that once we as citizens are aware and can tangibly view our energy usage we will self regulate our consumption- this is growing trend in business and social models- when dealing with large numbers of people or consumers that need to be regulated it is more efficient to let the people do some of the work. The traditional model has been to regulate it from the top meaning controllers, analysts, engineers, ceos, businessmen, managers and governments making large scale decisions that are often times too rigid and not effective for all cases of all people. Customers, citizens, and employees are unhappy and frustrated as a result. So far it seems that only Google employees have been able to test the monitoring software but as you can see they are having dramatic changes in their energy consumption. ![]() RAD!!! Posted by Brennan Novak on Dec 17, 2008 Until we totally do away with printing text on paper- which perhaps will be never. Ink usage is something we totally need to improve upon. That is exactly what the clever folks at SPRANQ, a Dutch creative communications company did when they created Ecofont, a new font face, that uses up to 20% less ink that normal fonts. Best of all it is free to download and free to use. Grow Up Already

Posted by Brennan Novak on Dec 16, 2008 Cities like New York and Hong Kong have a big problem- there are far more people than the physical region can sustainably support with traditional agriculture models. What's the solution? Population control? It might help a little but not enough. As the saying goes "when the going get's tough..." it's time to grow up- in this case vertically. Vertical or urban farming could be a viable solution.
Here is a wonderful article from Time Magazine about experimental verticle farming and a wonderful photo gallery on their website. Currently the biggest problem with building a cutting edge 30 story vertical farm is that it costs more money to build than developers are currently wanting to spend. Hopefully, as the world shifts from a purely capitalistic system to a more eco-communal system, we will see less new condo developments, and more vertical farms. Au Revoir, Yellow Pages

Posted by Save The Fucking Planet on Nov 13, 2008 When the revered British international business newspaper the Financial Times offers a 75K prize to an environmental tech endeavor, that most definitely means the "powers that be" are starting to realize we have to do something about the way we are treating out environment. "The Financial Times and Forum for the Future are hosting a competition to find the most innovative solution to the effects of climate change. The winner could be a new technology, system or service, novel organisation or business model. Sponsored by Hewlett-Packard, the $75,000 prize aims to turn the best idea into reality." So, if you've got an idea for a product or service that has been piloted, prototyped, or gained recognition locally you should definitely check out the competition. Posted by Save The Fucking Planet on Sep 02, 2008 Wether you love, like, tolerate, or dislike (which is rare), the British rock band Radiohead you have got to hand it to them for spearheading an environmentally friendly way of touring. First off they chose to do their light show using LED lights, which if you haven't heard about, are proving to be one of the most energy efficient light sources we've invented yet. Read their blog here: Lighting the LED way Then to take it to the next level they figured out way to actually do their tour tour using large battery charged by solar panels that recharge themselves as the band drove from city to city. Read their blog here: (n)eveready The solution that made the mobile solar power possible was using Mobile Solar Power products who claim to be "the leader in the field of transportable solar generators." They are a company totally worth checking out if you're in the market for mobile large scale solar power generators. Hats off to Radiohead for being one of the most awesome bands of all time. |
